My Thoughts About The SPCA:

The following statement is my OWN VIEWS and do not necessarily reflect those of the SPCA. These are MY thoughts, MY feelings and should be taken as just that.

Imagine A World Without The S.P.C.A.

The S.P.C.A. in British Columbia has been under a lot of fire lately. It has proven that just as any other organization, it is not perfect. It has screwed up, and has to be accountable for it's mistakes, but I believe that the Society has been trying to learn from the errors of it's past, and head into a positive direction with the public's opinion helping to shape it's future.

Yet, that is not enough for some so called animal's rights societies. They make it their mandate to scavenge any small piece of gossip; any old mistake dealt with years ago, and blow it out of proportion. They act as though the S.P.C.A. has done nothing but harm, and abuse during it's many years of service to the community. They refuse to see the many wonderful things the S.P.C.A. has accomplished.

Imagine British Columbia without the S.P.C.A. What would happen? Sure, some of these animal rights groups would step forward and help as much as they were able to.. But on what scale? Who would house the stray cats until they found new homes? Who would try to find ways to reunite those cats with their original owners? Who would house and find homes for the cats and dogs whose owners could no longer care for them? Who would house and find homes for the hundreds of rabbits, rodents and birds? Who would investigate and prosecute cruelty cases? Who would offer assistance to those many pet owners who have fallen on hard times and cannot afford regular veterinary care? Who would provide thousands of spays and neuters at (sometimes up to) a third of the price of many regular vet clinics?

Without the S.P.C.A., I see cities over run with feral or stray cats, breeding indiscriminately. I see a province where people are not punished for cruelty to animals, and other people who are afraid for their pet's safety as well as their own, on the street. I see a community where, although a few good-hearted animal lovers try their hardest, they cannot keep any of this from not happening. I see a community where vigilante activists take it upon themselves to set their own laws, whether they are fair or not. We need the S.P.C.A.

I ask you, the public, to step forward and share some of your positive stories. I know there are many out there. I see and hear them on a daily basis at my work. I hear of success stories by the score, of people who were helped when they were down, of pets returned, of new families started, and of a caring, compassionate voice when a pet was lost, or had to be let go.

Please don't let these harsh; judgemental critics have the last word. If you have a positive story to share about the S.P.C.A. I ask you to come forward, to show the public that the S.P.C.A. has done, even if it just means telling a shelter or hospital personnel that you appreciate their efforts. If you feel the S.P.C.A. needs to improve, then by all means, come forward also, but give your criticism constructively, not deconstructively. Make a difference. Save our Society.

Sincerely, Susan Pereira S.P.C.A. Employee and Advocate.
